Day Excursion: Mount Zion - A Beacon of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian Traditions

"From the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion... so shall be the multitude of all the nations gathered on Mount Zion" (Isaiah 29:8). Mount Zion, a captivating peak in the heart of Jerusalem, holds a long history of ancient traditions dating back to the days of the siege of Jerusalem during the reign of King Hezekiah and the absorption of exiles from the tribes of Israel. It encompasses Christian traditions from the Second Temple period as the seat of the Essenes and culminates in political disputes, which continue to be expressed to this day. Among the three monotheistic religions, we gather around the sanctuary on the holy mountain "to which all the nations will stream." Join us for a fascinating day trip to Mount Zion, the holy mountain revered by so many.

On this tour, we will explore the religious traditions associated with the Mount of Zion. We'll hear the story of the Jewish defense in the Jewish Quarter during the War of Independence against the backdrop of the gate bearing the name Zion. We'll learn about the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim traditions surrounding the location of the Last Supper and its connection to King David (the Prophet David), as well as the significant Christian miracle that took place in the Upper Room (the site does not serve as a church, so entry is also available to non-Christians).

We'll delve into the traditions and controversies surrounding the Tomb of King David, and the strong traditions developed until it became a Jewish prayer site and an important pilgrimage site. In the early days of the state, when the young and courageous Director-General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Rabbi Samuel Zanvil Kahana, decided to turn the area into an important pilgrimage site for all monotheistic religions. We'll also learn about his work in the "Hall of Remembrance" Museum, the world's first Holocaust museum (which hasn't changed much since 1948), and conclude the visit at the Dormition Abbey, commemorating the tradition of the Holy Virgin Mary, Miriam, the Mother of the Messiah, a Catholic tradition associated with Mount Zion.

After the tours on the mountain, we'll take a break for lunch in the Jewish Quarter, and towards the afternoon, we'll head together to the Christian Quarter, adorned for the last days of the year. We'll stroll through the festively decorated streets of the city, experiencing the atmosphere of the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations in the Christian Quarter (a stunning foreign feel in the streets of Jerusalem) before heading back.
