China: Yunnan - An In-depth Exploration of the Ethnic Minority Region

Yunnan Province is the minority province of China, where many of the most picturesque and diverse ethnic minorities in China live. This journey is an anthropological expedition following the traditions of minority tribes, who still today adorn themselves in traditional attire with various colors and maintain a unique culture and religion that seems mysterious to many. All of this against the backdrop of the breathtaking landscapes of Yunnan Province: the rice terraces of Yuanyang, the hot springs of Mile, the Stone Forest of Shilin, the city of Dali – the ancient capital of the Bai minority, the city of Lijiang located at the foot of the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the breathtaking trek along the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the narrowest channel of the longest river in Asia: the Yangtze River, and the cherry blossoms in the Shangri-La region and its fascinating natural landscapes.

Day 1-2 I Intermediate Destination - Coming

We'll depart on a morning flight from the west to Bangkok. Upon arrival in the Thai capital, we'll take a short stroll in the downtown area and continue to the local airport for another flight to Coming, the capital of Yunnan Province, for accommodation and dinner.


Day 3 I Kunming and Surroundings

This morning, we'll embark on an introductory tour of the marvelous Yunnan: Coming is a rare blend in modern China, preserving the old and classic alongside a modern cityscape. Decorated squares with traditional Chinese gates, coffee houses, restaurants, and Western-style clubs. After the initial city tour, we'll head to the western hill area, where we'll ascend by cable car to the hilltops crowning the Yuantong Park. We'll admire the breathtaking view of Lake Geon and embark on a downhill walking trail passing through a fascinating Buddhist monastery. Accommodation and dinner in Coming.


Day 4 I Kunming - Stone Forest - Mile

This morning we'll visit one of the most beautiful and famous tourist sites in the southern part of China - the Stone Forest. Here, we'll witness the unique karst rock formations, which have turned the tourist site into an entire forest of "magnificent palaces". We'll stroll amidst the towering rocks, their surprising shapes captivating our imagination and granting a special feeling of a mysterious forest. After the forest tour, we'll head to the warm springs city of Mile, located outside the beaten path in the Yunnan Province. Mile is a green and beautiful city situated on the banks of a lake, abundant with charming gardens. After dinner, we'll indulge in the warm springs of Mile.


Day 5 I Mile - Yuanyang Rice Terraces

This morning we'll enjoy another morning dip in Mile's special warm springs before departing for our next destination. Our next stop will be the picturesque town of Yuanyang, considered the unique home of the Hani minority, one of the well-known ethnic minorities in the People's Republic of China. They live on the slopes of the Yuanyang terraced fields, which for 1,300 years have turned this unique mountain range into breathtaking works of art in the form of amazing rice terraces descending from the mountaintops. Towards evening, we'll be treated to a spectacular sunset view over the rice terraces and organize our accommodation for the night.


Day 6 I Yuanyang - Kunming - Dali

This morning we'll wake up early to witness another beautiful sunrise amidst the rice terraces. From here, we'll journey back northwards to the Coming region. En route to the provincial capital, we'll stop to visit the vibrant markets, the commercial hub of the region, where we'll encounter for the first time various minority girls residing in the Yunnan Province. Yunnan is considered the most ethnically diverse region in China. The many ethnic minorities living in the area gather in the district towns with their distinctive attire, offering their modest merchandise. A colorful and unforgettable experience. In the afternoon, we'll reach the city of Coming, the capital of Yunnan Province, where we'll continue our unique market journey with a visit to the flower and bird urban markets, despite their names, it's almost impossible to find birds and flowers in these markets, instead, there's an abundance of other animals being sold for consumption in an area where they eat "anything that flies, swims, or walks". We'll spend the evening after dinner taking a special train ride to our next stop on our journey to Dali, the city of Yunnan (the train ride is in private sleeping carriages where each carriage accommodates two passengers on soft beds).


Day 7 I Dali

This morning we'll arrive in Dali, a city with a glorious history where members of the Bai minority tribe still live to this day, located on the western shore of Erhai Lake at an elevation of 1,900 meters above sea level. With our arrival in Dali after the train journey, we'll stop for breakfast and then hop on bikes, just like the locals, and cycle to Erhai Lake. We'll continue our bike tour, visiting the three pagodas. In the afternoon, we'll wander through the picturesque streets of the ancient city, where the preserved architecture between its walls presents a unique stone architecture, and we'll be impressed by the serenity characteristic of its cobbled streets.


Day 8 I Dali - Shizhuo

This morning we'll visit the lively market of the town of Shizhuo, the city of the Bai ethnic minority whose capital is the city of Dali. We'll stroll through the market streets and meet the members of the minority who are accustomed to wearing their traditional white attire before returning to Dali. From the center of Dali, we'll take a special boat trip to the picturesque Jinshao Island for a short tour. Towards noon, we'll head northward through a beautiful road crossing Lake Erhai, the lake known as one of the most picturesque cities along our tour, Li Jiang. We'll arrive in the evening for a first acquaintance tour of the picturesque city.


Day 9 I Li Jiang

Today we'll dedicate the day to a tour of the city of Li Jiang and its sites. This city, located on the border with Tibet, in a valley surrounded by snowy mountains rising to heights of 5,500 meters, contains within it a network of waterways traversing it lengthwise and widthwise. It is also the seat of the Naxi minority, who still maintain a fascinating and unique patriarchal lifestyle to this day. In the morning, we'll visit the Black Dragon Pool, where we'll notice the magical reflection of the unified dragon mountain impressively towering above the magical artificial lake. We'll visit the Dongba Museum, which fascinatingly describes the unique patriarchal lifestyle of the city's traditional inhabitants. Towards noon, we'll leave the old city and embark on a journey to the Stone Drum Peak, a mountain rising to a height of 4,600 meters above sea level. We'll ascend by cable car to its summit and gaze from its majestic peak over the surrounding mountainous landscape. At the foot of the mountain, we'll witness one of the highlights of the "Impressions" tour, a show in which many participants take part. After the show, we'll return to the city and continue wandering through its picturesque streets.


Day 10 I Li Jiang - Tiger Leaping Gorge - Shangri-La

This morning we'll leave the city of Li Jiang early in the morning and embark on one of the most beautiful treks in the world: the Tiger Leaping Gorge Trek. The landscapes of the gorge, which we will walk along a wonderful hiking trail between the impressive mountain cliffs of the Himalayas, are located in the center of the gorge is a rock, according to the local legend, this rock is where a tiger leaped across to the other side of the mountain, hence the name of the special trek. After the tour, we'll meet the local vehicle and continue to another peak in our journey, the area known as Shangri-La.


Days 11-12 I Shangri-La

This morning we'll depart on a journey to the fascinating mountainous landscapes nature reserve Bitahai, where we'll embark on a tour among the turquoise lakes, majestic mountains, and tall pine forests. Upon arrival at the park, we'll take a short walk around the lake. On our way back to Shangri-La, we'll visit the lamasery of the Tibetan lamas and learn about their unique lifestyle. We'll dedicate the following day to a walking tour in the city of Shangri-La and its surroundings. We'll visit the ancient lamasery and its adjacent villages, where we'll meet the local residents.


Day 13 I Shangri-La - Kunming

This morning we'll leave Shangri-La and return to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. We'll stop for a panoramic view of the ancient city and continue on our way. After lunch in the city, we'll continue to a nearby forest where we'll enjoy a short walk among the trees before returning to our hotel in Kunming for dinner.


Day 14 I Kunming - Bangkok

This morning we'll embark on a return journey to the airport, this time in Kunming. We'll depart on a morning flight to Bangkok, the intermediate destination from which we'll continue to Tel Aviv. Upon arrival in Bangkok, we'll have some free time for last-minute shopping or a light meal before continuing to our final destination with the flight.
