Iceland - A comprehensive deep expedition across the vastness of the Northern Island
Millions of years ago, Iceland began to emerge from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean and above the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Since then, nature's forces have been working tirelessly, shaping the landscapes of the island: glaciers, roaring rivers and waterfalls, active volcanoes; mud springs, hot geysers, and geothermal waters. The dynamic Earth reaches its geological expression peak here. It's a fascinating ancient land, where landscape shaping processes and natural construction continue to operate and occur under our feet and before our eyes. During the trip to Iceland, enjoy many experiences, walking in magical natural landscapes, glacier sailing, whale watching, snowmobile riding, and more. Tour Route

Our Suggested Itinerary - Explore a past Aujo Travel trip for your next adventure
Day 1 | Keflavik
Arrive to Reykjavik, the Icelandic capital (if waiting time at the intermediate destination permits, we will explore the city). Upon arrival in the evening, we'll head for accommodation in the town of Keflavik, located near the main airport of the island's capital. Accommodation in Keflavik (dinner not included).
Day 2 | Thingvellir National Park - Geysir - Gullfoss Waterfalls
This morning, we'll have our first encounter with the Icelandic Highland bus that will accompany us during our journey across the unique island. Leaving the town in the morning hours, we'll head east to Thingvellir National Park, located on the shores of the largest lake in Iceland. Here, at this historic site, the Viking parliament of the island was founded over 1,100 years ago. Upon arrival at the reserve, we'll embark on an exciting tour among its trails and marvel at its unique geological structure. After the tour of the reserve, we'll continue our journey to the Geysir village, the village that gave its name to the global phenomenon of hot water geyser eruptions from the heart of the earth. From Geysir, we'll continue to the Golden Falls, Gullfoss, the impressive and beautiful waterfalls for which Iceland is famous. We'll be impressed by their great power and stop for accommodation in the Geysir village area.
Day 3 | Geysir - Fjallabak Nature Reserve - Landmannalaugar - Hella
This morning will focus on the beautiful Fjallabak Nature Reserve, where we'll enter through the winding paths of lava flows and volcanic rivers. We won't miss out on beautiful walks among the unique rock formations, mineral springs, and blue lakes. From here, we'll continue to the Landmannalaugar cabin, where we'll bathe in the warm river water bubbling at a temperature of about 40 degrees. This area is considered an important hiking center, and as much as our schedule allows, we'll explore the area. Towards evening, we'll head south again for accommodation in the town of Hella.
Day 4 | Hella - Boat Trip to Westman Islands - Skogafoss Waterfall - Kirkjubaejarklaustur
This morning, we'll depart on another southern journey and board the ferry that will take us to sail to the southern group of islands: the Westman Islands, an archipelago where a major volcanic eruption occurred in 1973, threatening to bury an entire town beneath the ground. During the visit to the island, we'll explore the remnants of the volcanic eruption on the main island of Heimaey, continue to the rugged coastline of the island and observe the bird colonies that come to the area to nest in the summer season. Of course, we won't be able to resist admiring the puffins, the unique seabirds. After visiting the puffin areas, we'll return by boat to the main island and visit the picturesque Skogafoss waterfall. Accommodation in the Kirkjubaejarklaustur area.
Day 5 | Mount Hekla Volcano
This morning, we'll head north to the area of Mount Hekla volcano, where over 200 years ago, in 1783, one of the documented violent volcanic eruptions occurred, which was measured across the globe: an eruption that led to the deaths of many, created a great famine on the island, and caused extreme climatic phenomena that affected Europe and America. We'll walk among the calderas and tell the story of that extreme event before returning for another night's stay in the Kirkjubaejarklaustur area.
Day 6 | Glacier Lake Sailing - Snowmobiles
This morning, we'll once again take advantage of the Highland bus's capabilities and embark on a rugged journey to the shores of the glacier and the Vatnajökull glacier tongue, considered the largest glacier cap in Europe, third only to the giant glaciers of the Antarctic and Arctic. From the glacier, we'll continue our journey to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where we'll embark on an unforgettable sailing experience among hundreds of icebergs that have just broken off from the large glacier and are floating towards the North Atlantic Ocean. From the lagoon area, we'll continue our off-road journey to the top of the glacier cap and the Vatnajökull Glacier from which we'll embark on a snowmobile ride in pairs (no prior experience needed). We'll ride for about an hour across the expanses and crevices of the glacier, then continue northward along the fjords on the eastern side of the island. We'll ascend towards the northern highlands of the island and stop for accommodation in the Egilsstaðir area.
Day 7 | Askja Caldera
A challenging and beautiful off-road day awaits us: this morning, we'll set out on a journey through the world's northernmost desert, traversing terrain that seems to have been copied directly from the surface of Mars, leading to the Askja Caldera, a giant volcanic crater hiding Lake Öskjuvatn within it, which spans five kilometers in diameter. Upon reaching the caldera, we'll embark on a "Martian" walk towards the lake, where NASA experiments have also been conducted, and the adventurous among us will take a dip in Víti, one of the crater's secondary lakes. We'll return northward through another impressive route, crossing water crossings, to stay overnight in the Húsavík area.
Day 8 | Dettifoss Waterfalls - Lake Mývatn
This morning will start with visits and special hikes around Lake Mývatn, from which we'll continue to the Jökulsá á Fjöllum Canyon, a powerful and impressive waterfall-forming glacier river that flows northward while rubbing against the young and impressive basalt canyons that fall into a series of high waterfalls: Dettifoss Waterfalls, also called the "Niagara Falls of Europe." After being amazed by the falls, we'll continue our journey to the active volcanic area of Krafla, where we'll take a walk around the Víti crater lake, at the heart of which lies Lake Víti. We'll continue to explore the geysers and sulfuric mud springs, and in the evening, we'll head for a dip in the small and warm blue lagoon. Accommodation in the Húsavík area.
Day 9 | Lake Mývatn - Hverir - Akureyri
This morning, we'll head out for more hiking tours around Lake Mývatn. We'll explore a cave with warm water, a product of the unique geological activity in the area, and embark on a walking tour around the Krafla volcano, enjoying more unique natural phenomena as time allows. From Lake Mývatn, we'll embark on a journey to the "Waterfalls of the Gods," Goðafoss, from which we'll continue to Iceland's second-largest city, Akureyri, where we'll have a short tour before heading to the northern fjords area, where we'll stay in the Sauðárkrókur village vicinity.
Day 10 | Snæfellsnes Peninsula
A westward bus journey will take us to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a long peninsula extending westward into the ocean. Around noon, we'll set out to sail among the islands of Breiðafj örður Bay, during which we'll observe a variety of seabirds nesting among the rocky islands and be impressed by unique geological formations. During the sailing trip, the crew will indulge us with treasures from the bay's seabed: seafood, shellfish, and regional delicacies. After the sail, we'll embark on a hiking tour among lakes and stunning views of Iceland's western fjords and unique geological formations. The evening will be spent in the fishing town of Hólmavík.
Days 11-12 | Snæfellsjökull Volcano - Blue Lagoon - Home
This morning, we'll travel back along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, through fjords and fishing villages, and reach the base of the highest volcano, Snæfellsjökull, 1446 meters, into which the protagonist of the French writer Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" was "swallowed" for a journey into the earth's interior. We'll be impressed by the glacier-covered mountain and return south to the Reykjavik area. In the afternoon, we'll board a boat and set out to sea to try to spot whales. We'll have urban completion activities in the capital city, and in the evening, we'll visit one of Iceland's famous sites - the "Blue Lagoon," a giant pool fed by water from a natural geothermal borehole that provides, among other things, electrical energy to the city of Reykjavik. From the lagoon, we'll continue to the airport for a night flight back home.
