Bulgaria - A hiking and adventure expedition in the Balkan Mountains - For young adults only

Hiking tours in the marvelous mountain landscape, cheerful and colorful folklore, wonderful Balkan cuisine, and day-to-day life in small villages will characterize our special folklore journey in Bulgaria: we will be impressed by Sofia, the beautiful capital of Bulgaria, awakening from its communist slumber. We will explore Plovdiv, the second-largest city in Bulgaria, which combines old and new. We will ascend the Rila Mountains and the ski resort town of Bansko, travel through natural forests and planted groves, cross the Balkan mountain range, hike in the wild Pirin Mountains and the round Rodopi Mountains. We'll explore stunning canyons, visit the impressive caves of Yagodina and Devetaki, pass through the Balkan range, see the Iskar Canyon, meet the pleasant and picturesque mountain people in their villages, and enjoy their simple way of life on this special and lovely authentic journey.

 Our Suggested Itinerary - Explore a past Aujo Travel trip for your next adventure

Day 1: Sofia

flight to the capital of Bulgaria. Upon arrival, we'll transfer to the hotel near the airport for overnight stay (dinner not included). Overnight stay in Sofia.


Day 2: Sofia - Devin

Good morning Bulgaria.... This morning, we'll head eastward on the main road connecting Sofia to Plovdiv, the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Just before Plovdiv, we'll leave the highway and drive south on winding roads amidst lakes towards the Greek border and the Rodopi Mountain range. We'll settle in the town of Devin and embark on a short hiking route, about two hours, in Devin Canyon (if time allows). Overnight stay and dinner in Devin.


Day 3: Adventures in the Rhodope Mountains - Gliding route in Haramiska Cave and Jeep tour in Buynovo Canyon

Today we will visit two of the most beautiful and deep canyons in Bulgaria: Trigrad and Buynovo. After breakfast, we'll take a one-hour drive to the heart of the "Trigrad" canyon and the impressive sheer rock cliffs. The area is characterized by beautiful and unique karst phenomena: dripstone caves, cave bells, and underground river systems. The first part of the day will be dedicated to "Haramiska" cave - a route combining walking, climbing, short via ferrata, and a 50-meter abseil into the cave. At the end of the activity, local jeeps will be waiting for us as we embark on an off-road route to a stunning viewpoint overlooking Buynovo Canyon. At the end of the day, we'll return to our hotel in Devin. Overnight stay and dinner in Devin. (Haramiska Cave activity about 6 hours. Jeep tour about 3 hours)


Day 4: Satan's Canyon route and travel to Bansko

This morning we'll bid farewell to Devin and after a short drive, we'll reach the starting point of our hiking route - "Satan's Canyon". A 4-hour hiking route in one of the narrowest and most beautiful canyons in the area. The route includes crossing wooden bridges and climbing on wooden and vertical ladders. At the end of the route, we'll hop on a car and travel to our next destination - "Dospat" lake. This lake is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria. We'll stop at a viewpoint and have lunch overlooking the lake. On our way to Bansko, we'll stop to admire the village of "Dolen," which is an architectural reserve with unique Bulgarian Renaissance architecture. Depending on the time, we'll stop at one or two more points of interest on our way to Bansko. Overnight stay and dinner in Bansko.


Day 5: Hiking route between the Pirin Lakes - Hot Springs - Bansko

This morning we'll transfer by a short drive to the Vihren Hut - the starting point of our hiking route. Upon arrival, we'll embark on a circular hiking route through the "Banderitsa" valley for several hours, passing several alpine lakes with mesmerizing turquoise colors, overlooking some of the highest peaks in Bulgaria, crossing streams, and enjoying the pristine nature. At the end of the hike, we'll head to the village of "Banya" where we can soak in natural hot springs pools and relax after the hike. Before returning to the hotel in Bansko, we'll enjoy a special surprise. Overnight stay and dinner in Bansko. (Hike of about 4-5 hours).


Day 6: Bansko - Stob - Rila Monastery - Hike to the waterfall - Govedartsi Village

After breakfast, we'll say goodbye to the Pirin Mountains and travel to the Rila Mountains: after about an hour and a half drive, we'll reach our first stop - the pyramids of Stob - where we'll embark on a short hiking route to a unique natural phenomenon in this area. Then we'll continue driving to the Rila Monastery - the largest and most important monastery in Bulgaria, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: we'll visit the monastery and learn about its history and its unique Jewish connection. Afterwards, we'll travel to the town of "Sapareva Banya" and embark on a hiking route towards the "Goritsa" waterfall, which falls from a height of 50 meters. We'll end up in the village of "Govedartsi" where we'll be treated to royal hospitality from the Bulgarian kitchen. Overnight stay and dinner in Govedartsi.


Day 7: Vihren Peak from Malyovitsa

Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the trip and one of the most beautiful via ferrata routes in the world: after a short drive, we'll reach the alpine school of Malyovitsa (one of the oldest climbing sites in Bulgaria), meet the professional mountain guides, receive equipment, and start our journey. A hike of about an hour and a half will take us to the starting point of the via ferrata. We'll gear up with harnesses, helmets, carabiners, and start climbing towards the summit of "Kuklata". The route climbs 300 meters on a vertical cliff and takes about 3 hours. From the summit, we'll descend on a different trail back to the Malyovitsa hut, where we'll stop to refresh before the final descent towards the car. Overnight stay and dinner in Govedartsi. (Activity on this day will last about 8 hours)


Day 8: Seven Rila Lakes - Sofia

We'll start the day with a short drive to the cable car that will take us to the Seven Rila Lakes hut located at an altitude of 2,150 meters, above the forest line. Our hiking route will start from the hut and pass through the famous Rila Lakes. It will be a breathtaking day of hiking, and at its end, we'll descend back with the cable car to the bus and travel to Sofia (two hours drive). Upon arrival, we'll have free time for shopping, and those who wish can join the guide for a short tour of the city. We'll conclude the journey with a festive dinner and transfer to the airport. (Hike of 5-6 hours)
