Our Suggested Itinerary - Explore a past Aujo Travel trip for your next adventure

Day 1: Athens - Mount Helicon - Delphi

Upon arrival, we will arrange ourselves on the jeeps, check the oil, fill out the rental company's registration forms, and head north on the road towards the town of Thiva. From Thiva, we continue on dirt roads towards the Valley of the Muses and the villages on the slopes of Mount Helicon. We'll drive through oak and chestnut forests until we reach the town of Arachova, where we'll enjoy an unforgettable panoramic view over the Corinthian Gulf. Overnight stay and dinner in the Delphi area.

Day 2: Delphi - Mount Giona - Lake Mornos - Vardousia - Ano Chora

We start the day with a visit to the fascinating site of Delphi, built as a sanctuary to Apollo on the steep slopes of Mount Parnassus. After consulting the Oracle of Delphi and receiving its blessing, we head west to the Valley of the Olive Trees and ascend to the peaks of Mount Giona and Lake Mornos, which resembles a crescent moon. Continuing through oak and chestnut tree forests to the Vardousia mountains, we pass through the remote village of Dafnos and continue climbing towards the Vardousia peaks. We'll enjoy a panoramic view of the entire area before reaching our hotel in the Ano Chora area for overnight stay and dinner.

Day 3: Aperantia Gorge - "Greek Switzerland"

This day is dedicated entirely to exploring the Aperantia Gorge, also known as the "Greek Switzerland." The area is characterized by high snow-capped mountains in winter, forests, diverse vegetation, small waterfalls, and streams flowing everywhere, all against the backdrop of remote and isolated villages. In the morning, we'll cross the Pantolikos ridge and encounter the new road that winds above the Krikler Potamos River canyon. We'll descend to the river for a refreshing break before ascending to the Kaliakouda ridge. In the afternoon, we'll stop at the picturesque village of Megalo Chorio for a coffee break and taste the liqueurs made by the locals. From here, it's not far to our hotel in the Karpnissi area.

Day 4: Karpnissi - Agrafa - Plastira Lake

In the morning, we'll travel along the beautiful canyon of the Karpenissiotis River to the hanging monastery of Proussos, perched on the cliff wall. After the exciting visit, we head north to the wild part of the area - the Agrafa ridge. We'll meet the beloved villagers engaged in agriculture - some chopping wood, some engaged in fish farming, and some working their land and the orchards next to their homes. In the afternoon, we'll cross the streams of the Tavropos River and climb the steep slopes of the Agrafa ridge, reaching heights of 2,000 meters above sea level. We'll traverse it through winding roads until we reach Plastira Lake, where our tents will be set up. Overnight stay near Plastira Lake.

Day 5: Plastira Lake - Metsovo - Monodendri

This morning, we'll leave the serene and calm lake and enter the mountainous region of the Acheloos River. We'll be impressed by the artificial lake created for hydroelectric power generation and ascend north among the remote villages to the village of Halki, from where we'll descend to the picturesque town of Metsovo. Here, we'll connect to the new road built on the path of the ancient "Via Egnatia," which will take us to the city of Ioannina, situated on the shores of a lake. From Ioannina, we'll ascend to the Zagoria region for an overnight stay in the beautiful village of Monodendri.

Day 6: Village Walks in the Zagoria Villages

This morning, we'll start with a walk to the monastery of the village of Monodendri, perched high on a steep cliff overlooking the Vikos Gorge, before walking among the stone-built villages to the other side of the gorge. We'll enjoy an unforgettable view of the river springs and the nature reserve, where a hidden blue pool lies. We'll continue hiking in the "Valley of the Muses" and immerse ourselves in the waters of the pools. On this day, we'll also go on a number of footpaths according to the physical condition of the travelers and spend an additional night in the enchanting village of Monodendri.

Day 7: Monodendri - Kalambaka

This morning, we'll embark on a wet water adventure in the area, getting to know the local rafting team, donning appropriate gear, lowering the boats into the Tzoumerka River, and setting off for a rafting adventure after the rainy season (depending on water levels, of course). Afterwards, we'll visit Metsovo, where Romanians and Vlachs reside, engaged in woodworking and weaving, before continuing to the town of Kalambaka, where we'll camp for the night.

Day 8: Meteora

We start the day with a cherry-picking experience: Meteora offers a tour among the hanging monasteries, and we'll visit one of the most amazing phenomena in the world. Indeed, standing in front of the giant cliffs, from which beautiful monasteries protrude, is one of the unforgettable experiences of our lives. A wonderful and unique combination of sculpture in nature and fascinating architecture. We'll climb to one of the monasteries, admire the extraordinary landscape.
