Day 1: Kotor Bay - Lovcen
We depart on a flight to Montenegro, where upon landing, we'll join the local team and head towards the southernmost fjord in the world, Kotor Bay. The Adriatic fjords give Kotor Bay a unique geographical shape, resembling a northern lake commonly seen in Scandinavian countries. After touring the bay, we'll arrive at the town of Kotor, a charming Venetian town surrounded by ancient walls, nestled at the foot of the Black Mountains that gave the country its name (a two-hour walking tour of the city). After exploring Kotor, we'll ascend one of the most scenic roads in the world to the Lovcen Nature Reserve, where we'll spend the night in a cozy hotel. Accommodation and dinner in the Lovcen area.
Day 2: Cetinje - Lovcen - Durmitor Nature Reserve
We'll start the morning with an ascent to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Montenegro, offering panoramic views of the entire country, while recounting the story of Njegusi, Montenegro's spiritual father. We'll reach a beautiful viewpoint after climbing several hundred steps – an effort definitely worth it. From here, we continue our journey through the town of Njegusi, driving on one of the most beautiful roads in Montenegro: through stunning turquoise lakes formed as a result of dams built in the area to the Durmitor Nature Reserve, one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Balkans. We'll navigate through the high mountains and reach the water divide in the heart of the reserve, where we'll learn about the local shepherd culture, unique summer villages where local shepherds move during the snow thaw season in search of new grazing areas, and the unique agricultural culture. Accommodation and dinner in Zabljak.
Day 3: Day of hiking in the Durmitor Nature Reserve
Today we embark on a day of hiking in the heart of the Durmitor Nature Reserve: the reserve is an isolated Alpine ridge surrounded by immense and magnificent canyons, including the deepest canyons in Europe. The day will start at Black Lake, a beautiful lake that is actually a connection of two small Alpine lakes located at the foot of "Bear Mountain" towering above. From here, we'll continue to explore the depths of the Durmitor Reserve and embark on easy hiking trails to special points of interest. We'll pass through a small alpine lake and hills with impressive Komot-like formations to reach the saddle overlooking one of the gems of the reserve – the Ice Lakes. We'll continue to explore and hike in the area as much as time allows before returning to Zabljak for accommodation and dinner.
Day 4: Zabljak - Rafting on the Tara River - Lipovo - Kolasin
This morning, we'll depart for a drive to the famous bridge over the Tara River. We'll hear the unique story of the bridge, which is linked to the Partisan struggle against the Nazis in World War II. The bridge connects two high mountain ridges, creating one of the deepest valleys in Europe. Not far from the bridge, we'll experience a wet and unforgettable rafting adventure on the challenging waters (about two hours of activity). From here, we'll continue on a special route to the interesting summer villages of the Biogradska Gora Nature Reserve to the picturesque Lipovo village, where we'll go on a walking tour around the village and the surrounding area rich in clear rivers and abundant special fishing farms. After touring the village and its surroundings, we'll continue driving to Kolashin for accommodation and dinner in the spa and serene town of Kolashin.
Day 5: Day of hiking in the Biogradska Gora Nature Reserve
After breakfast, we'll hike to one of the beautiful mountain huts located in the heart of the Biogradska Gora Nature Reserve, where we'll start our hiking day. We'll pass through several villages together with the mountain residents and mountain huts that awaken for another day of work in their personal farms. We'll ascend to the peak of Zekovo Planina and descend to Lake Pishacha, hidden from sight. If the weather permits, we'll swim in the lake and have lunch. Afterwards, we'll continue on a jeep ride to the accommodation spot in Borciak, in basic accommodation cabins.
Day 6: Another day of hiking in the Biogradska Gora Nature Reserve
A stunning day in its beauty awaits us in the Biogradska Gora Nature Reserve, one of the four national parks in Montenegro. The park covers an area of 54 square kilometers and includes a large forest, peaks up to 2,000 meters, and six glacial lakes. At the heart of the park lies a primeval forest covering an area of 16 square kilometers, containing trees hundreds of years old: beech, oak, maple, ash, and hornbeam. About 100 tree species over 500 years old rise to a height of about 50 meters in the dense forest. The walk and descent to the lake involve passing through a magical initial forest that we will reach after crossing the ridge overlooking it. Along the way, we'll enjoy a lunch and local hospitality, warm and loving as only the residents of the Montenegrin mountains know how to provide. After visiting the lake, we'll take a 20-minute ride back to Kolashin.
Day 7: Kolasin - Moraca Canyon - Skadar Lake - Budva
This morning, we'll leave the hotel in Kolasin and head south again to the coastal area. On our way to the seaside resort area of the Adriatic Sea, amid stunning green landscapes, we'll pass through one of the deepest canyons in Europe, the Moraca Canyon. Along the beautiful road that was blasted through the mountains during the Yugoslav days in the 1950s to connect Belgrade with the coast, we'll stop briefly at the picturesque monastery in the area. From here, we'll continue to the northern part of Skadar Lake, considered the largest freshwater lake in Europe. The lake is a unique area of reeds and nymphs, rich in waterfowl. At the end of the day, we'll descend to the coastal road that will lead us to the Dubrovnik of Montenegro, the tourist town of Budva, an ancient beautiful town surrounded by walls on a small peninsula, where we'll conclude the journey and summarize the trip at one of the city's cafes. Accommodation and dinner in Budva.
