Day 1 I Tbilisi
Upon landing late at night, we will settle into a hotel in the city center. Dinner in Tbilisi is not included.
Day 2 I Tbilisi - Vardzia Caves - Akhaltsikhe
This morning, we will leave the capital city of Tbilisi and head southwest towards the lowlands of the Caucasus, an area rich in stunning and colorful floral displays. This region is where Georgian Armenians and Greeks come every summer to graze their herds in the fresh, cool pastures, which by this season are already covered in snow. From here, we will continue south until we reach the town of Akhaltsikhe, "the new city," and proceed from there to the Vardzia Caves - a magnificent cave complex that initially served as a fortress defending the border against the Byzantine Empire. Later, during Georgia's golden age, it became an important theological center under the management of Tamara, who was dubbed "the king." We'll explore the caves on foot before heading to our accommodation in Akhaltsikhe for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 I Akhaltsikhe - Kutaisi - Tskaltubo
This morning, we'll equip ourselves at the local market in Akhaltsikhe with supplies for a picnic, learn some basic Georgian phrases, and set off on a northward journey to a challenging off-road day through the stunning landscapes of the Harguli Reserve. We'll ascend through dense forests until we reach the highlands where the summer pastures for the villagers lie. We'll encounter some local shepherds, taste their special cuisine, and continue our beautiful off-road journey among the shepherd villages towards the source of the water that rises over 2,000 meters above sea level. Finally, we'll arrive in the area of Kutaisi, where we'll cross it and stay overnight in the town of Tskaltubo. Accommodation and dinner in Tskaltubo.
Day 4 I Kutaisi - Mestia
This morning, we'll leave the Kutaisi area and embark on a long journey northward. We'll make a brief stop at the local market in Zugdidi, where we'll hear the story of the city, which to this day serves as a refuge for Georgians who fled the conflicts in the 1990s in the Abkhazia region. From Zugdidi, the real adventure begins: the ascent to the Svaneti region, the most beautiful geographic area in Georgia. Our journey northward along the Inguri River passes through one of its southernmost points, where a reservoir blends beautifully with the towering mountains above. As we progress, the unique mountain landscape will accompany us along the way. If we're lucky, we might catch a glimpse of Mount Ushba, soaring over 4,700 meters above sea level, or Mount Tetnuldi reaching a similar height. The powerful mountain scenery will accompany us throughout the journey as the Inguri River flows alongside us. Towards evening, we'll reach Mestia - our base for the next few nights at the foot of the towering mountains.
Day 5 I Trekking Day in Svaneti
This morning, we'll embark on a hike around Mestia: we'll head westward, crossing rivers until we reach the end of the road where Mount Ushba rises majestically. From here, we'll start an unforgettable hiking trail, crossing a hanging bridge over the river and beginning our climb through stunning beech forests. The hike will lead us to a glacier, where we'll witness its shimmering colors and the flowing water emerging from it, known as the Glad Glacier. We'll return and hike back to the town of Mestia. In Mestia, we'll ascend one of the most beautiful viewpoints for a breathtaking panorama of the mountains and peaks. We'll return to our hotel for overnight stay and dinner.
Day 6 I Mestia - Ushguli
This morning, we'll embark on a challenging off-road journey from the village of Ushguli. The beginning of our tour will be an ascent to the highest point along the water divide, where we'll pass as part of the Georgia jeep route. From there, we'll begin our descent towards the village of Lentekhi, bidding farewell to the towering and majestic peaks of the Svaneti Range. Towards evening, we'll arrive in the picturesque village of Ushguli, considered the highest permanent settlement in Europe. Against the backdrop of Mount Shkhara, the highest peak in Georgia, sits a small picturesque village designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll gaze upon the picturesque mountain that rises to a height of 5,068 meters above sea level. We'll wander among the village houses and stay overnight in this charming village, the most beautiful in Georgia. Accommodation conditions in Ushguli: basic but unforgettable...
